Is having a new car valued more than where you live?

I have recently moved to a new city and the one thing that I notice is everyone from the cashiers to elderly are driving brand new cars. It puzzles me that even with inflation and minimum wage, most people are chosing to showcase thier vehicles in lew of buying new furniture or upgraded housing?
